South Africans petition against Burna Boy performing at ‘Africa Unite’ concert

A group of South Africans have petitioned the Minister of Arts and Culture against Nigeria Singer Burna Boy’s inclusion in the anti- xenophobia concert  which is coming off this month.

According to the artistes who are under the umbrella of Tshwane Entertainment Collective have raised the objection because they believe Burna Boy incited hatred against South Africans during the recent Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

“Whoever may have deemed that the country needs a PR exercise of this nature would have done so largely as a result of the callous, misleading and unwarranted incitement by this very artist. Not only did he spread falsehoods through his extensive platform, he literally incited violence and hate.” The group wrote.

The group has indicated that they are not in support of the exclusion of locally based performers whereas Burna Boy has been included.

The concert has been dubbed ‘Africa Unite’ and is scheduled to take place on the 23rd and 24th November at Cape Town and Pretoria respectively.

Burna Boy in a social media post during the Xenophobia period said he will never return to South Africa.
